Lea and Lilli used Boccia to raise awareness and recruit new Youth Leaders to the movement!

About the Project Leaders

Lea is a 21-year-old Youth Leader who lives in Halle, Germany. Lea likes to swim and dance at the Vere. Lea is a part of the Unified Generation because she believes no one should ever be excluded!

Lilli is a 19-year-old Youth Leader from Berlin. Lilli goes to school at Elinor-Ostrom-Schule in Berlin and studies sports and fitness. She first got involved with Special Olympics because her sister, Maren, works there. She is a part of the Unified Generation because she wholeheartedly believes that no one should be excluded.

The Inspiration

Lilli and Lea believe that young people should get involved with Unified Generation early. They believe that young people should get involved by participating in Unified activities such as climbing, cooking, and swimming. Lea and Lilli plan to set an example of how to take part in Unified activities!

The Project

Lea and Lilli decided to switch the focus specifically to Boccia because they believed that it was more successful for everyone. With everyone that got involved, they garnered enough interest to form a Unified Boccia Team! At first Lea and Lilli found participants who were interested in their event. They solved this problem by connecting with other Youth organizations and getting them to help promote the event. Lea and Lilli were inspired by their friends and family who supported them the whole way. Konrad and Hanna, two Youth Leaders who were also a part of the German delegation that went to the 2023 Global Youth Leadership summit, also facilitated a project similar by creating a Unified Sporting event.

Impact

Lea and Lilli facilitated a successful day of Unified Boccia. The Youth Pair managed to welcome around 20 New Youth Leaders to become either a Special Olympics Athlete or Unified Partner!

Project Leader Reflection

Lean and Lilli learned how to design flyers and how to promote events most effectively on social media. They also learned how to organize a Boccia event and how to communicate effectively. Lilli and Lea initially had difficulty planning the event and trying to align schedules. Platforms like Zoom helped them stay connected to the group throughout the planning process. They are most proud of the number of participants that joined and want to continue to work to plan more Unified events like this one!
