Mona has actively participated in numerous programs with Special Olympics Bahrain, including being a part of a Unified pair in the Special Olympics Bahrain “Lets Grow Together” program, an active member of the Effective Leader Program, and also participated in the Virtual Global Youth Leadership Summit in 2022. Mona strives to be an advocate for inclusion at both the local and global levels through her collaboration with Hajer.
Hajar Muhammed Al-Jowder is a 22-year-old Youth Leader from the Jaw area of Bahrain. Hajar is a Special Olympics Athlete who practices taekwondo, winning several gold and silver medals in Bahraini Special Olympics competitions. Additionally, Hajar is a member of the Effective Leader Program where she serves as the official spokesperson for health affiliated with Special Olympics Programs. Hajar feels a sense of strength, self-confidence, and determination resulting from being a part of the Unified Generation. SHe constantly strives to set an example for those with intellectual disabilities, advocating for their rights.
About the Project
Mona and Hajar noticed that there was a lack of understanding about intellectual disabilities among members of their community. Misconceptions due to lack of education often led to discrimination and the exclusion of those with intellectual disabilities. To help increase understanding about intellectual disabilities, Mona and Hajar will engage individuals with and without intellectual disabilities in a Unified experience where youth leaders will work together to promote inclusion in rehabilitation centers and schools. The Youth Leaders involved will partake in educational and training programs designed to equip them with the tools needed to spread the culture of inclusion throughout their community. Mona and Hajar hope that these workshops will attract more youth to their movement to spread the culture of inclusion throughout Bahrain further.
