I was saddened to learn about the passing of Eunice Kennedy Shriver earlier this morning. She lived a long life of compassion and service that enriched the lives of so many others.
Many Americans know about the extraordinary political and social contributions of her brothers, John, Robert and Edward, but Eunice Kennedy Shriver was a trailblazer in her own right. Her vision to create the Special Olympics gave hope, dignity and inspiration to millions of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families.
I join all Americans in extending my heartfelt condolences to the Kennedy and Shriver families for their loss and ask that we all keep her husband of 56 years, Sargent and their children, Robert, Maria, Timothy, Mark and Anthony, in our thoughts and prayers at this difficult time.
