Delaware Unified Partner Wins Nike's 'I Am Sport' Award

Keegan Cahill has had a busy year.

He was the quarterback of the Newark Charter School’s Unified flag football team, and he led the team to a state championship last fall. He won a bronze medal in the Special Olympics Delaware Unified doubles bowling competition over the winter. He served as a captain on the Newark Charter School Patriots varsity lacrosse team this spring.

But it was as much Cahill’s efforts off the field as his prowess on it that earned him the Nike I Am Sport Award. He received the award at the annual Delaware Sports Awards. The award recognizes those who have a passion for sports that they’ve passed on to others.

As a Unified partner in Special Olympics Unified Sports, Cahill plays alongside teammates with and without intellectual disabilities. He has been involved with Unified Sports for two years.

“It has been such a great opportunity to work so closely with Special Olympics throughout the past year,” Cahill said. “I strongly believe that everyone deserves an equal chance to play sports in high school, disability or no disability. And making that happen means a great deal to me."

He helped organize the school's Spread the Word to End the Word event and is a leader in their Respect Club.
