Konrad Dębniak (35), an accomplished athlete from Special Olympics Poland, has become a true role model for his community—on and off the sports field. His journey to the World Games is a testament to his generous and relentless spirit, and his inspiring determination—all encouraged by his deeply supportive coach, Remigiusz Woźniak.
Konrad's story begins in 2014, when he first joined Special Olympics. Over the years, Konrad has participated in numerous regional competitions, displaying his prowess in cross-country running, Nordic walking, basketball, and football, among other sports. His dedication and hard work have earned him several medals, including a gold medal in the 400-meter race in cross-country running and a silver medal in basketball.
However, it was his debut in cross-country skiing at the National Special Olympics Winter Games in Wisła that truly set him apart. Konrad's performance in this discipline earned him the right to participate in the draw for the Polish team for the Special Olympics World Winter Games in 2025. This moment marked a significant milestone in Konrad's athletic journey, as he was selected as one of the three Polish representatives in advanced-level cross-country skiing.

Reflecting on his experience at the World Games, Konrad expressed immense pride and joy. "I felt great from the very beginning," he said. "Being selected as a competitor for the Special Olympics Poland team was a dream come true. The atmosphere in our team and the support from our coaches were incredible."

Konrad's participation in the World Games was not just about competing; it was also about representing his country on the international stage. He described the competition as tough, but he was satisfied with his results. "I tried to give my best, and I'm really happy with my performance," he said.
As a newly-elected member of the Special Olympics Poland National Committee, Konrad also had a chance to award medals to his fellow athletes at the World Winter Games, which made for a truly memorable moment. "When I found out that I would be handing out medals to my teammates, I couldn’t believe it," he recalled. "It made me feel fantastic, knowing that I was chosen to decorate other athletes. It was a huge honor for me."
Konrad's journey to the World Games has been filled with challenges and triumphs. His coach, Remigiusz, has played a crucial role in his success, motivating him to engage in challenging and intense training.
"My coach always tells me to train hard because the more I train, the better I’ll perform at competitions and in life. He has changed my approach to both sports and life."
Beyond his athletic achievements, Konrad has been heavily involved in Special Olympics Poland and his willingness to give back showed in his active support of Ukrainian refugees through the Unified with Refugees initiative. He volunteered at the County Humanitarian Center, helping families from Ukraine who had fled war zones. "Helping families at the reception center, bringing food and basic supplies was an amazing experience," he said. "It always seemed like the right thing to do."
Looking ahead, Konrad is optimistic about the future of Special Olympics Poland. He believes that the movement plays a significant role in integrating people with disabilities into society and showcasing their potential. "Special Olympics gives me a sense of purpose and the realization of dreams, not just sports ones," he said. "It's a fantastic place for people with disabilities."
Konrad's story is an inspiring reminder of the power of determination, resilience, and community support. His journey to the World Games and his contributions to the Special Olympics and humanitarian efforts highlight the impact one individual can have on the lives of many. As Konrad continues to pursue his dreams and represent his country, he remains a role model for athletes everywhere, proving that with hard work and dedication, anything is possible.
