Leaving Low Expectations Behind: Meet Shirnel

""

Shirnel Swarts is a bright light wherever she shines—and she’s been shining a lot lately. A talented athlete, Shirnel is excited to be training for her second Special Olympics World Winter Games!

Shirnel is a Special Olympics speedskater from South Africa. She’s been involved with Special Olympics since age 13. She says she grew fond of speedskating because of the adrenaline rush. The fact that she was very good at her sport…also helped!

Shirnel says she was also motivated to send a clear—and positive—message to anyone who had low expectations about her abilities. As she put it, ”People were making jokes about me attending a special school. I had to do well in sport so they can see I can compete!"

Shirnel says Special Olympics South Africa means so much to her because it has changed her life and helped her find hidden capabilities despite any disability. She says she’s also found a sense of belonging.

When she’s not on the ice, Shirnel enjoys singing; she sees it as a form of meditation and relaxation.

One of Shirnel’s proudest moments was when she had received medals at school for her singing. Her family has been a great support structure; they are extremely proud of her and her progress in sport through the years.

Shirnel was extremely excited when she was selected to be a part of the Special Olympics South African National Team that travelled to Austria for the 2017 Special Olympics World Winter Games, especially knowing that she was representing South Africa on a Global stage.

Back then, she competed in the 500m event and the 333m events—and won gold in the 333m! Now, she’s super-excited to be back at the Special Olympics World Winter Games Turin 2025. She is also ready to win more gold!
