Trial Run for Brand New Figure Skating Rules

At the recent European Figure Skating Competition in Vienna, a new scoring system used by the International Skating Union (ISU) was tested for the first time by Special Olympics. As a result, the system, also used in the Olympics, will now be a part of Special Olympics competitions across the world for years to come!

Among the 50 athletes competing at this special ‘premier’ event was Icelandic figure skater, Gabriela Kami Arnadottir. Gabriela emphasised the huge impact that just one year with Special Olympics has had on her life: “I was a figure skater for over 10 years but I’ve only been competing in Special Olympics for a year. Special Olympics gave me opportunities for fun and friendships, and the chance to travel abroad!” No doubt Gabriela will be travelling and competing for many years to come under the new system!

The European Figure Skating Competition was supported by the EU, Vienna City, Eissportvereinigung Favoriten Club and the Austrian Skating Federation.
