A holistic approach to healthy eating, movement, positive self-image and strengthening social interactions was the main emphasis of the recent Inclusive Summer Health Camp in Rogla, Slovenia. Run by Marko Janko and G&Z – an institute that organizes summer camps where children and their families learn about a healthy lifestyle – in cooperation with Special Olympics Slovenia, the camp was a huge success!

“This holistic and inclusive approach is the best way to achieve long-lasting healthy habits for kids and their families,” explains Marko Janko. He adds, “[The approach] has a lot of educational power, as children learn about, accept and overcome diversities and differences between them.”

About 100 participants without intellectual disabilities (ID) and 35 Special Olympics athletes aged between nine and 33 enjoyed three active and informative weeks together. Over 70% of last year’s participants returned and the fact that all athletes managed to lose weight – on average 1.5 kg per week – gain strength and increase their energy levels further highlights the camp’s remarkable success!

About 130 Slovenian participants with and without intellectual disabilities learned about a healthy lifestyle at the ‘Tabor Gibaj in Zmagaj’ summer camp which was successfully organized by the G&Z team in cooperation with Special Olympics Slovenia.
