We hosted a Special Olympics South Africa healthy athletes screening and Healthy Hero’s training at Tshegofatsong Special School in Mamelodi, Pretoria. With this screening we were able to help educate the community of Mamelodi about the importance of proper health care for children and adults with Intellectual Disabilities (ID).
A total of 198 athletes were screened in all 7 Special Olympics disciplines through the day by the clinical volunteers who were trained during the Special Olympics Clinical Directors training that took place the day before the screening.
Special Olympics South Africa understands that people with an ID are neglected in different levels, including that of health. Therefore, it is part of our duty as an organisation to cater for their needs and provide accessible health-care services.
Through the Special Olympics Healthy Communities, we are able to expand year-round access to health care, health education, and wellness opportunities.
