Highlights from First-Ever Unified Champion Schools Competition Worldwide

""

In a groundbreaking event, Special Olympics Middle East/North Africa (MENA) region has achieved multiple firsts through the Regional Unified Champion Schools (UCS) Competition, marking a transformative milestone in our mission to expand inclusivity and Unified Sports across the region. This historic gathering has set new benchmarks, bringing together programs, youth leaders , and ambassadors to celebrate unity, sportsmanship, and the power of inclusion. For the first time, Special Olympics MENA hosted a regional competition dedicated UCS, bringing together athletes and youth leaders from across the region to compete in Unified Sports .

Programs with established UCS initiatives—including Egypt , Jordan , Morocco , and the United Arab Emirates —showcased the strength of their athletes through fierce and friendly competition. The Programs competed in 3x3 basketball with over 20 UCS representing those Programs. These Programs have been leading the way in UCS programming and provided inspiration for others through their commitment and success in Unified Sports. Watching these young athletes compete demonstrated the power of inclusive communities and the transformative impact of UCS on individuals and schools.

This event is a testament to the dedication of our athletes, coaches, and UCS partners in promoting an inclusive culture. It provided a platform where young people of all abilities could come together, form connections, and showcase their skills in a supportive and empowering environment.

Another first was the gathering of Programs from across the Special Olympics MENA region to work collaboratively on expanding UCS initiatives. This event brought together both current UCS Programs and newcomers, fostering an environment where ideas, strategies, and best practices were shared. The commitment to growing UCS in more communities has never been stronger, with Programs across the region pledging to expand opportunities for youth to engage in Unified Sports.

This event also marked the first time that two regional events were hosted within a single UCS—the American University in Cairo (AUC). This unique collaboration underscores the exceptional support we receive from SO Egypt and AUC, reflecting a shared commitment to fostering inclusivity within academic institutions. The success of this partnership exemplifies the power of local support in bringing UCS initiatives to life.

Special Olympics MENA Metrics: Impact Across the Region

As of July 2024, Special Olympics MENA boasts over 500 UCS initiatives, engaging more than 173,000 young people in UCS programming. Additionally, 1,900+ teachers and coaches have been trained to promote inclusivity in their schools, and over 15,100 partners and athletes are actively engaged in Unified Sports. These numbers reflect the profound and growing impact of UCS across the region, creating communities where young people of all abilities are included and celebrated.

This first-ever Regional UCS Competition was more than just a series of events; it was a powerful statement about the strength of Unified Sports and the importance of inclusion. By bringing together Programs from across the Special Olympics MENA region to compete, collaborate, and celebrate, Special Olympics has fostered a new sense of unity and purpose. Each “first” achieved during this event has set a precedent for the future, paving the way for more inclusive schools, stronger partnerships, and a shared vision for a world where everyone is valued.

This competition has set the stage for ongoing growth, unity, and inclusion across the Special Olympics MENA region. As we continue to build on these achievements, we look forward to expanding UCS, engaging more youth leaders, and strengthening our community of Unified champions. Together, we are making history and creating a brighter, more inclusive future.
