Patrice: The Movie

This documentary-style romantic comedy drives the discussion of marriage equality forward, with Special Olympics New Jersey athlete Patrice Jetter behind the wheel. In her late 50s, Patrice finds the love of her life, Garry, who also has a disability. They want nothing more than to get married, but if they do—or if they move in together—the government benefits they need to survive, including Medicaid, would be cut.

Devastated by their inability to marry, Patrice organizes disability rights actions to raise awareness about marriage inequality faced by people with disabilities. Special Olympics is an outreach partner for the film, supporting its activism and advocacy efforts.

Considering their situation, Patrice and Garry decide to hold a non-legally binding commitment ceremony, which they find it challenging to afford, as they can't have more than $2,000 in the bank without jeopardizing their Medicaid benefits. Working to create a world she would want to live in, Patrice continues to fight the systemic barriers that prevent her from living life on her terms.

Patrice uses her creativity to move through a world that was not built with her in mind. In the film, Patrice’s past brought to life with fantastical recreations based around her artwork. With long-time friend, director Ted Passon, Patrice stars in scenes from her past imbued with her art and her spirit. Patrice has reinvented her world again and again for fun and survival.
