R. Sargent Shriver Jr. (born November 9, 1915; died January 18, 2011) was an attorney, diplomat, first director (1961–66) of the U.S. Peace Corps, and Democratic nominee for the U.S. vice presidency in 1972. He also served as head of the Johnson administration’s “War on Poverty” and helped create such programs as Head Start, Community Action, Legal Services for the Poor, and Job Corps. He also served as U.S. ambassador to France. In the 1980s, he was named president of Special Olympics, which his wife, Eunice, had founded in 1968. He was the recipient of numerous honors—including the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
