The biggest grassroots basketball event in Switzerland, FIBA Open 2017, took over courts in Mies in June. The third edition of the FIBA Open was a great success with 142 teams participating with more than 550 players. Additionally, 2500 spectators joined the athletes on the court to celebrate basketball and share their excitement.
One of the key missions of the International Basketball Federation is integration. That’s why many teams of migrants participated in the tournament. As a further sign of inclusion, two teams from Special Olympics Switzerland have been invited to play demonstration matches: the Special Trainings Team from Vevey Riviera Basket and Handisport Genève R’Geneva.
“It was a simple gesture, which, however had a great impact on the basketball players, their coaches and families. They really felt respected and included,” said Xavier Blanc who manages the French speaking part within Special Olympics Switzerland.
