Watch Live: Education Experts Call for Greater Commitment to Inclusion in Education

Symposium on education systems transformation for and through inclusive education: Opening Plenary

Starts April 18 at 9:00 AM

Symposium on education systems transformation for and through inclusive education: Closing Plenary

Starts April 18 at 3:30 PM

Experts from the Brookings Institution, Special Olympics International and the Global Partnership for Education will explore how policymakers can overcome current obstacles to make schools and communities more inclusive for learners with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD).

This symposium will convene key policy and decision makers, researchers, and practitioners, as well as youth learners with and without IDD, with particular emphasis on the Global South, to address the systems impact of inclusive practices in education by answering the question—“What would it take to transform global education systems to be truly inclusive for learners with disabilities?”

Despite extensive global policy conversations about the need to meet the UN Sustainable Development Goals supporting more equitable education, no nation has come close to achieving truly inclusive classrooms and school communities at scale.

The event will commence with introductory remarks in the morning, followed by a series of concurrent workshops with topics to include AI and EdTech for learners with IDD, financing inclusive education through investing more equitably and efficiently, gender and disability and building stronger family-school partnerships, among others.

The closing sessions will begin with a policymaker panel featuring three international ministers. Two members of the Special Olympics Global Youth Leadership Council will close out the day with a panel on the importance of centering youth voices in the drive toward greater inclusion.
