Odion-Imafidon Osatohamwen, Special Olympics Nigeria athlete

Odion-Imafidon Osatohamwen

Odion-Imafidon Osatohamwen-Osato as she is fondly called- lives in Lagos, Nigeria. She joined Special Olympics Nigeria (SO Nigeria) in 2016. She has participated in several SO Nigeria sports training programs, but her passion is football (soccer). She plays a goalkeeper position for the team. She enjoys this position as it gives her a bird’s eye view of the field of play and her team’s performance. She participated as one of the major supporters of the Lagos State football team during Special Olympics Nigeria National Games in 2018. She organized other team supporters and they cheered and motivated the SO Nigeria team to win gold in the men’s football tournament.

She was one of several athletes trained as SO Nigeria Health Messengers in 2018. Since then, she has been educating others about healthy lifestyles and the overall well-being of persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities. She has spoken to families and community members at Family Health Forums and other events in Lagos. Participating in SO Nigeria health and fitness program has motivated Osato to always stay fit and healthy. As a Health Messenger, she observes the basic rules of eating fruits and vegetables daily, exercising regularly and drinking a minimum of five bottles of water daily. She has also become self-confident since her health status improved. She hopes to broaden her Health Messenger work by providing health education sessions at the Healthy Athletes® screening events where she would speak to the athletes, families, and community members attending the event.

Osato went to Modupe Cole Memorial School where she acquired bead-making skills. She lives with her father and her sister. She is very close to her family, they are her great supporters. In her spare time, she likes singing, listening to music and practicing her writing skills. She also enjoys playing football and long jump.
