Ndeye Bigue and Khady aim to promote health and fitness practices to educate and encourage young people in their community to take on healthy habits and implement them in their daily lives.

About the Project Leaders

Ndeye Bigue is from Dakar, Senegal. Ndeye Bigue joined the Special Olympics Senegal Program in 2016 as a clinical volunteer, as she is a midwife by profession. Ndeye Bigue is trained in the topics of menstrual and body hygiene management and reproductive health. She has used her background to collaborate with SO Senegal and spread awareness of her area of specialty within her community. Ndeye Bigue considers herself a Youth Leader because her goal is always to help build the capacity of athletes. She is passionate about increasingly inclusion of people with intellectual disabilities.

Khady Gueye is a 20-year-old from Dakar, Senegal. She has been involved with Special Olympics Senegal in the role of athlete since she was just 8 years old. Khady is also a Health Messenger with Special Olympics. Khady attended the 2019 Global Youth Leadership Summit (GYLS) in Abu Dhabi, and this year she will attend the 2023 GYLS in Berlin! Khady is a proud member of the Unified Generation and hopes to inspire other young people to get active within the inclusion movement.

The Inspiration

Ndeye Bigue and Khady have identified an issue facing young people in their community in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic. They noticed that during the pandemic, many young people adopted unhealthy habits pertaining to diet and exercise, and this was detrimental to their overall health. The activities of Special Olympics Senegal were suspended during the height of the pandemic, which may have contributed to a decrease in young people staying active.

The Plan

Their project aims to solve this problem by hosting several workshops over the course of 6 months, educating members of their community on the topics of nutrition and meal planning, and at-home health conscious practices, such as calculating Body Mass Index BMI, and taking medical constants such as height and weight. SO Senegal's athlete leaders will host Unified fitness sessions to engage young people in exercise practices and teach them some workout routines and fitness challenges they can complete at home. Ndeye Bigue and Khady will be sharing footage of their athletes getting healthy and active on their social media.

Project Goals

Ndeye Bigue and Khady hope that by organizing these workshops, people in their community will recognize the importance of adopting healthy eating and fitness practices, contributing to promotion of their overall well-being. They also hope to expand the impact of Special Olympics programming in their community.
